מאמר זה מבקש לתאר את האופן שבו אומץ דגם המבצע-היוצר (singer-songwriter) בישראל – כיצד ביססו זמרים ישראלים, בראשם שלום חנוך ושלמה ארצי, את זהותם האמנותית בסוף שנות ה־70 כיוצרים המבצעים שירים שהם עצמם כתבו והלחינו. עם זאת, את הצלחתם המסחרית, שהִתרגמה להופעות סוחפות באצטדיונים מול קהל אלפים, מימשו השניים רק החל מאמצע שנות ה־80, כשאימצו באופן גלוי וסמוי מחוות כתיבה, הגשה, ביצוע והפקה ממודלים אמריקניים. נבחן את המודלים שהשפיעו על חנוך ועל ארצי, ונדגיש את השפעתו של ברוס ספרינגסטין, מחשובי הכותבים-היוצרים האמריקנים, שתפקידו בתרבות הישראלית טרם נדון, דרך עבודתם עם המפיק לואי להב, שהיה שותף בהקלטת שלושת אלבומיו הראשונים של ספרינגסטין. נַראה כיצד יוצרים-מבצעים ישראלים הושפעו בעקיפין מתהליכים וממאורעות אמריקניים כגון טראומת וייטנאם והשפל הכלכלי של שנות ה־70, ובו בזמן מאורעות מקומיים, דוגמת מלחמת לבנון הראשונה, הותירו עליהם את רישומם הישיר. היה זה נדבך נוסף בתהליך האמריקניזציה של הרוק הישראלי בפרט ושל התרבות העברית בכלל. נבקש, אם כן, לברר את האופן שבו הותאם דגם הסינגר-סונגרייטר האמריקני לאתוס הישראלי המשתנה במהלך שנות ה־70 וה־80, ובכך אִפשר עליית שורה של זמרים וזמרות הכותבים את שיריהם האישיים בעברית. שירים אלו לא רק שהיו פעמים רבות אינטימיים, אלא לראשונה בזמר העברי הפופולרי, גם נשאו מסרים של מחאה חברתית נוקבת.

The Singer-Songwriter and the Americanization of Israeli Rock \ Alon Schab; Eran Shalev 

In this article, we describe how the singer-songwriter model was adopted by Israeli performers who established their artistic identities in the late 1970s. Led by Shalom Hanoch and Shlomo Artzi, these musical artists began by performing songs they wrote and composed. It was not, however, until they subtly adopted American models of writing, performance, and music production in the mid-1980s that they reached commercial success. Bruce Springsteen, one of the most creative American musicians, whose role in Israeli culture has yet to be studied, was the primary influential model for Hanoch and Artzi. We examine how his impact was felt through their work with producer Louis Lahav, who helped engineer and produce Springsteen's first three albums. Our study includes a discussion of how American cultural processes and events, such as the Vietnam War and the economic depression of the 1970s, indirectly influenced Israeli singer-songwriters. At the same time, local events, such as the First Lebanon War, affected their art more directly. The development of local singer-songwriters was another step in the Americanization process of Hebrew culture, especially Israeli rock music. The article explores how the American singer-songwriter model was adapted to the changing Israeli ethos during the 1970s and 1980s, thereby enabling the rise of a number of male and female musical artists who wrote their deeply personal songs in Hebrew. These early songs were not only works of intimate expression, but for the first time in popular Israeli music, also carried messages of poignant social protest.
