A typography of desperation? Semiotic meanings in "For Rent" signs, as a visual expression of economic and social distress during the COVID-19 period / Guy Eldar

This article explores a visual project that documented "For Rent" signs in Tel Aviv during February 2021, . The documented signs, serving as a visual expression of that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic, were examined using geosemiotics . This analytical approach studies the sign's indexality (understanding a cultural sign through its placement and connotation), interaction order (the establishment of a "social self" out of social interactions and the dynamics of social roles and power), and especially, the semiotics of typography (deriving typeface significance from physical characteristics or from the history of past usage).

An examination using the experiential metaphor, which relies on extraction of semiotic meaning from the various typeface components (such as weight, width, or flow) . This analysis showed that most signs used similar typefaces, the majority of which lacked a strong prior context. Examination revealed an array of values ranging from "stability" and "reassurance" to "hesitation" and "contempt." As a result, despite a first impression that “despair” was the main feeling evoked by the signs, in actual fact, the majority could actually be semiotically interpreted as "apathy," chiefly due to their lack of uniqueness.

The geosemiotic analysis highlighted the connection of signs to their surroundings, and their major influence on the general gloominess of the population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
