תמיכה חומרית

הציווי הנורמטיבי הפמיליסטי לתמיכה חומרית בילדים מתקיים בישראל לצד ציווי נורמטיבי ניאו־ליברלי לאחריות היחיד לסיפוק צרכיו החומריים. לפיכך, הורים רבים מנווטים בין תמיכה בילדיהם לבין שמירה על עצמאותם הכלכלית. כשתמיכה זו מופיעה בתנאים של מחסור, מתהווה תופעה חברתית שאני ממשיגה "ויתור מעמדי" – הורים התומכים בילדיהם תוך ויתור על מימון צורכיהם למרות הפגיעה בתוכניותיהם בהווה ובעצמאותם הכלכלית בעתיד. כדי לברר תופעה זו שאלתי כיצד מבינים הורים מהמעמד העובד הנמוך את הוויתור על צורכיהם ורצונותיהם לטובת תמיכה חומרית בילדיהם הבוגרים. במחקרי בחנתי את קווי המתאר של התמיכה הכלכלית באמצעות חקר השתנות המשמעויות של כסף בעולמם של הורים אלה, ועל־ידי בחינת משמעויותיו של ויתור מעמדי בהתמזגות של פמיליזם וניאו־ליברליזם. ניתוח 32 ראיונות חצי־מובנים שהתקיימו בנפרד עם 16 זוגות הורים לבוגרים צעירים הצביע על תחושת המתח בין הדאגה הכלכלית לילדים לבין הדאגה לעצמי שחווים המרואיינים. המתח התבטא במיוחד בהתייחסות לחוויית הוויתור על רצונותיהם וצורכיהם, ומגלה ארבע תבניות מובחנות: הורות ללא נפרדות, אידיאלים של מימוש עצמי, ויתורים כואבים וויתורים הנתפסים כשוליים. ריבוי משמעויות הנתינה שופך אור על אופייה של נתינה בין־דורית ביחס לאופן שבו הורים מהמעמד העובד הנמוך מתמקמים אל מול מערכת הלחצים שבין המחויבות לרווחה הכלכלית שלהם לזו של ילדיהם הבוגרים.

Class concession: Mapping the meanings of material support provided by low-income working-class parents to their adult children in the context of neoliberal familism \ Rona Ziv-Tjoernelund

The familistic normative imperative for material support of children in Israel coexists alongside a neoliberal normative imperative of individual responsibility for meeting one's own material needs. Consequently, many parents navigate between supporting their children and maintaining their own economic independence. When this support occurs under conditions of scarcity, a social phenomenon emerges which I conceptualize as "class concession": parents supporting their children while forgoing their own needs, despite the impact on their present plans and future economic independence. To explore this phenomenon, I asked lower-middle-class parents how they perceive the concession of their needs and desires in favor of providing material support to their adult children. In my research, I explored the contours of financial support by examining how the meaning of money has evolved in the lives of these parents, and by examining the implications of class concession at the intersection of familism and neoliberalism. An analysis of 32 semi-structured interviews conducted with 16 pairs of parents of young adults revealed a tension between financial concern for children and self-care. This tension was particularly evident in reference to the experience of conceding their wants and needs. Four distinct patterns were revealed: parenting without separation, ideals of self-realization, painful concessions, and concessions perceived as marginal. The multiple meanings of giving shed light on the nature of intergenerational support by lower-middle-class parents as they position themselves between commitment to their own economic welfare and that of their adult children.
