הצטלבויות

במאמר זה אנו מראות כיצד פעולות הוריות ואזרחיות משתלבות זו בזו בחברה הישראלית בת־זמננו. אנו ממחישות זאת באמצעות דוגמאות ממחקרים עצמאיים, שכל אחד מהם עוסק בדרכים שונות במעורבות אזרחית הורית בקרב קבוצות ממגוון מיקומים חברתיים, שפועלות במרחב לאומי–אזרחי–גיאוגרפי משותף. התובנות שלנו נשענות על ארבעה מקרי בוחן: הורים חרדים השואפים להכין את ילדיהם לעתיד טוב יותר באמצעות חינוך מדעי; משפחתיות אלטרנטיבית במסגרת תנועות הבוגרים של תנועות הנוער הציוניות; אימהות לילדים טרנסג'נדרים המבקשות לתווך את הסטטוס המשתנה של ילדיהן לסביבה; ו"אמהות על המשמר" – ארגון מחאה הנאבק נגד אלימות משטרתית וגזענות ממוסדת כלפי צעירים יוצאי אתיופיה.

העמדתם של מקרים מגוונים אלו זה לצד זה מאפשרת לנו לחשוב על הממשקים השונים בין משפחה למדינה, ולשאול על מגוון המשמעויות האזרחיות שנוצרות דרך פעולותיהם של הורים ממיקומים חברתיים שונים ומצטלבים. מן המחקרים האישיים שלנו והדיאלוג ביניהם אנו מציעות סדר יום חדש למחקר על משפחתיות, הרואה במשפחה בכלל, ובהורות בפרט, זירה מרכזית של אזרחות. אנו מציעות להבין הורות כאמצעי להשתתפות אזרחית, הכולל מופעים מגוונים שיכולים להיות חלק מתרבות הגמונית, ובו־זמנית להתקיים גם כאופני פעולה חלופיים.

Parental action as a civic act: New directions for the study of familialism in Israel \ Lauren Erdreich, Einat Gilboa-Oppenheim, Lea Taragin-Zeller, and Tanya Zion-Waldoks*

In this article, we demonstrate how parental and civic actions often intertwine in contemporary Israeli society. We illustrate this point through examples from unrelated studies which explore parental civic involvement among differently positioned social groups operating within a shared national-civic-geographical space. Our insights draw on four independent studies: ultra-Orthodox parents striving to prepare their children for a better future through science education; alternative familial practices among adult graduates of Zionist youth organizations; mothers of transgender children seeking to mediate their children's changing status within their environment; and "Mothers on Guard," a protest organization fighting against police violence and institutionalized racism primarily towards young Ethiopian-Israelis. Juxtaposing these diverse cases allows us to reflect on the various intersections between family and state and to examine the variety of civic meanings produced through the actions of parents from different social locations. Based on our individual studies and the dialogue between them, we propose a new direction for research on familialism, which views the family, particularly parenthood, as a central arena of citizenship. We suggest conceptualizing parenthood as a means of civic participation encompassing a variety of approaches, which might be part and parcel of hegemonic culture or involve alternative modes of action. We propose new directions for future research that could examine how parenthood and citizenship serve as intergenerational sites for the recreation of the sociopolitical sphere and how everyday parental actions reshape family-state relations
