Between Foreignness and Acceptance: Cultural Perceptions of the Migration of Alien Species \ Riki Anatbi, Noa Bloch, Liron Shani

The question of when a “migrant” becomes accepted or integrated into a host society lies at the center of many debates in social research on migration and nativeness. Yet, shifting the gaze to the nonhuman, whether alien, invasive, or native species, offers a different perspective on this issue. Although species have always moved and reshaped ecosystems, climate change and accelerated globalization have intensified these processes, producing wide-ranging social, economic, and ecological consequences. At the same time, the appropriate strategies for dealing with alien species, as well as their very definitions and interpretations, remain subjects of ongoing debate.

This article examines how cultural interpretations shape human responses to nonhuman species as they move, are introduced, or spread across landscapes, and how their status as “belonging” or “alien” is determined. Drawing on a multi-sited ethnographic study conducted in Israel among scientists, environmental activists, and nature enthusiasts, the article explores attitudes toward six different species, focusing in particular on three: the feral ass, eucalyptus trees, and the common myna.

The analysis shows how each of these species occupies a different position along a continuum between acceptance and estrangement. Through this analytical axis, the article revisits key concepts such as belonging, migration, and identification, demonstrating that perceptions of species are shaped by temporal depth, cultural symbolism, spatial visibility, and perceived material harm. Rather than drawing a direct analogy between human and nonhuman migration, the article uses the nonhuman perspective as a lens through which to reflect on the complexity of nativeness and foreignness, and to reconsider broader questions of acceptance, acclimatization, and exclusion in social and political life.

Writing on the "Wrong Subjects": Anthropology and morality in controversial social fields within the Israeli political context / Galia Plotkin Amrami

This paper discusses the moral significance of ethnographic research in controversial social fields. These fields are characterized by a moral hierarchy of research subjects and are inhabited by social actors who provoke criticism, or who cannot be assigned strict moral categories of "good" and "evil.” Some require that research be interwoven with advocacy for certain groups. Drawing on my own ethnographic study of a mental health center staffed by practitioners identified with religious Zionist ideology who provided professional services for settlers in the context of the evacuation from Gaza and the West Bank, I discuss the set of expectations that researchers face in such fields. My study in this controversial social field, together with recent scholarship that examines morality in anthropology, allows for an exploration of the meanings of the moral turn that has characterized the discipline of anthropology in recent decades. More specifically, it illuminates how these meanings are manifested in research on trauma and suffering in the Israeli political context, and how they create a combination of analytical and normative stances in anthropological research. The article discusses several strategies that researchers can use to present morally complex social realities. These include ambivalence, and focusing on interlocutors’ modes of moral subjectivation. Such strategies allow them to move beyond the idea of coherent moral subjects who act in accordance with pre-defined moral values. Furthermore, it frees researchers from burdensome expectations regarding the “proper” representation of the field. This is especially relevant for fields that are at the heart of political disagreement, in which the researcher is expected to map the social actors onto existing moral maps.
